Western winners celebrate in Digicel Shake to Win & Donate promotion
Codie Kameka and Manika Mitchell, million-dollar winners in the Digicel Shake to Win & Donate game.
After returning in April by popular demand and having a new charitable twist to the promotion, the Digicel Shake to Win & Donate game has turned out its first two weekly grand prize winners from western parishes.
Longtime Digicel postpaid customer, Manika Mitchell, from Hopewell in Hanover, was so excited, yet humbled, when she found out recently that she had won $1 million in the Digicel Shake to Win & Donate Promotion. Mitchell was even more grateful that she was able to also bless a charity of her choice, the Blossom Gardens Children’s Home in Montego Bay, St James, with an additional $200,000.
At first, Mitchell was skeptical was she opened the MyDigicel app to play Shake to Win and saw that she had won the $1 million. She quickly called her nephew to explain what she had seen. However, she was still not convinced until she received a call from Digicel later that day to say that she had won. Looking back, Mitchell believes that the win was her destiny: “My church sister said she had a vision of me and came by to check on me. She anointed my hands and prayed with me, and by noon I got the call from the Digicel agent confirming that I had won $1 million and an extra $200,000 for a charity of my choice, I was in disbelief. I just really have to thank God!” she exclaimed.
With plans to go to University this September to do her Bachelors in Business Administration, and the desire to do some needed home improvement, Mitchell said, “It came just in time, trust me. It came just right on time, I never knew where that money would come from to go to school, now thanks to Digicel I know how I will pay for my tuition.”
When asked about the charity she chose to donate to, Mitchell explained, “I previously worked at a supermarket, and the Blossom Gardens Children’s Home used to buy from us so I formed a relationship with the person in charge. My heart always goes out to them. Just the fact that those children are helpless and the government has to take care of them.”
Further west is the second winner, Codie Kameka, a final year student at the University of the West Indies, who hails from the historical German settlement of Seaford Town in Westmoreland.
He too held back on celebrating his million-dollar weekend win until he received the confirmation call from Digicel.
A prepaid customer since 2011, Kameka said this is the first time he or anyone in his family has ever won in a promotion. He recalled, “This is really a dream come true. As a university student, money is important in order to pay for your education, especially in these times with the whole Covid-19 pandemic upon us.” Besides a much-needed upgrade of his phone, Kameka will also put money towards his tuition and invest in the stock market when things get back to normal.
His $200,000 donation will go to the Montego Bay Animal Haven. An avid animal lover, Codie said, “I’m so inspired by the lady who started this institution as there are not enough shelters in Jamaica that look out for stray animals. The shelter would normally get food for the animals from hotels, but since they’ve been closed due to Covid-19, the Haven has been struggling.”
Chief Marketing Officer for Digicel, Nasha-Monique Douglas commented, “We are always joyful when our customers are able to use their winnings to make a meaningful difference to their lives and others. The charity element of the promotion could not be more needed at this time and we’re very pleased to see the passion of our winners coming through in this regard.”
Every Digicel Prepaid and Postpaid customer can download the MyDigicel app and get a chance to win the weekly grand prize of $1 million. Now with a ‘Shake to Win & Donate’ twist, all grand prize winners will get an additional $200,000 that will go towards a registered charity of their choice.
To enter, Prepaid customers must purchase any 7-day or longer plan in the MyDigicel app. They’ll also receive 25% bonus data on these plans. Postpaid customers need only to keep their accounts active by paying their bills on time and in full in order to Shake to Win. Add-ons including data, international minutes give customers even more chances to win.
