An M16 rifle as well as a 9mm submachine gun were seized in Salt Spring, St James on Friday.
Two high-powered rifles were removed from the streets of St James on Friday.
The police said the weapons were seized during a joint cordon and search operation conducted by teams from the St James Police Division, Specialized Operations and the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) in the Quarry, Salt Spring community of the parish.
Reports are that about 5am, an operation commenced during which several premises and open lots were searched. The two firearms, an M16 rifle along with a magazine containing eighteen rounds of 5.56mm ammunition as well as one 9mm submachine gun along with a magazine containing fifteen rounds of 9mm ammunition, were located in an open lot.
No arrests were made in connection with the seizure of guns and ammunition. However, seven persons were detained during the operation under the state of public emergency, the police said.
