The Wailers is still wailing strong 56 years after the band was first formed in the days of ska. The band has withstood the test of time despite various makeovers and is still making music fit for global consumption.
On Friday, the iconic band released its first single in 25 years, 'One World One Prayer' featuring Skip Marley, Farruko, Shaggy and Cedella Marley.
The 'Wailers' is synonymous with reggae royalty and the Marley name, so it is no surprise that Cedella, the daughter of reggae king Bob Marley, and her son Skip have collaborated with the timeless musicians to produce this poignant single which is sure to create waves. The addition of award-winning vocalist Shaggy and Puerto Rican-born singer and songwriter, Farruko, has only sweetened the musical serving.

The Wailers band started out as backing musicians for Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer in 1962 and stuck with Marley after Tosh and Wailer left to pursue solo careers. After Marley’s transition in 1981, the band stuck together with Aston ‘Family Man’ Barrett, his brother Carlton ‘Carly’ Barrett, Junior Marvin and Earl Wire Lindo touring extensively.
According to the band's website, it was Bob Marley himself who requested that the band stay together.
Most of the original members are no longer with the band - Carly Barrett was sadly murdered at his home in 1987 and Lindo died in 2017 - but the Wailers is still keeping the musical fire burning.
Skip Marley, the grandson of Bob, and his mother Cedella are among the musicians featured on the new Wailers single.
The present members of the band, according to the website, are bassist Aston Barrett; Aston Barrett Jr, who has taken on the mantle of emulating his uncle, Carly Barrett’s exploits on the drums; guitarists Donald Kinsey, Wendel ‘Junior Jazz’ Ferraro and Owen ‘Dreadie’ Reid; Josh David Barrett as lead vocalist; Andres Lopez on keyboards and sax man Glen Dacosta. Harmonising vocals are provided by Shema McGregor, daughter of Judy Mowatt and reggae pioneer Freddie McGregor; and gospel singer Anne-Marie Thompson.
The single 'One World One Prayer' is a continuation of the great work that has been carried out by this pioneering reggae band and speaks to a solution to the many ills that beset people around the globe in these turbulent times.
