Nunes looks set to extend lead in trainers' race with Universal Boss
Champion trainer Anthony Nunes.
Fortune could favour champion trainer Anthony Nunes on Saturday with his UNIVERSAL BOSS inheriting pole position as controlling speed, following EROY's scratch from the United Racehorse Trainers Association Trophy, going seven and a half furlongs.
Richard Azan’s ante-post favourite, imported EROY, had worked brilliantly last Saturday morning, galloping five and a half furlongs in 1:05.0, but picked up a stone squeeze and had to be pulled from the event on Friday.
UNIVERSAL BOSS would have been EROY's only matching speed down the backstretch and should now start favourite as Nunes seeks to maintain his $1.28 million stakes lead over rival Wayne DaCosta, the 18-time champion, who he dethroned last year.
Galloping at exercise on the lightning-fast track, UNIVERSAL BOSS has trained, clocking six furlongs in 1:12.0 on Sunday. In his last race, UNIVERSAL BOSS set a cracking pace in the Viceroy Trophy won by his stablemate, TOONA CILIATA.
Claiming apprentice Oshane Nugent slips seven pounds to ride UNIVERSAL BOSS at 119lb whereas title-chasing Dane Nelson, who trails Anthony Thomas by seven wins in the jockeys’ title race, is aboard Nunes’ other runner, LEGALITY, a closer.
The United Racehorse Trainers Association Trophy closes the 11-race card which runs off at 11:10 am.
