The Kiwanis Club of West St Andrew (KCWSA) recently reached out with grocery items to a homeless couple who lives under the bridge in Edgewater in Portmore, St Catherine.

The couple, who are identified as Karen and Shawn, are married and have been residing at the location for nearly 10 years.

Moved by the couple’s misfortune, Tricia Fearon-Kerr, a Jamaican nurse living in the United States, immediately contacted the charity with a donation to assist with immediate food needs. Collaborating with the club, Fearon-Kerr had made a similar gesture in May to a single dad in Duhaney Park who lost his job due to the coronavirus.

“Though we are a children’s charity, we have an active community services arm, and are happy to be an  avenue to extend sympathy to the needy always. We hope more benefactors will come forward to assist this couple out of this precarious living situation,” said Marshalyn Rose, KCWSA Public Relations chairman.

KCWSA President Courtney Morgan also emphasized the need for greater partnerships with the club as a basis for alleviating more pressing needs.

“The KCWSA is pleased to assist this couple through the heartfelt donation of Mrs Fearon-Kerr. As president, I welcome these partnerships in reaching the less fortunate. While we primarily focus on the children of Jamaica, our wish is to extend more help where needed. I implore others to join us in assisting via these fruitful partnerships,” he shared.
