Like the thousands on the interwebs, Jamaicans are celebrating the announcement made by democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, who’s selected Jamaican-American Kamala Harris as his running mate in the 2020 US elections.
Harris is the daughter of Jamaican father and an Asian-Indian mother, now deceased.
Indeed, the announcement is historic. It’s the first time a Black/South Asian woman is the vice-presidential pick for a major political party in the US, and many believe the duo front a presidential ticket that finally represents America.
Now, as expected, Jamaicans flaunt national pride via memes, tweets, gifs, and more, celebrating another ‘Jamaican daughter’.
Online users are so excited they’ve created the hashtag #MVPHarris, short for Madame Vice President Harris.
Harris, 54, would be several firsts in the White House: the first woman, the first African American woman, the first Indian American and the first Asian American.
And, if she should become president, Harris would be the second biracial president, following Barack Obama.
These are some of the top shares on social media in Harris’ support.
Fellow Jamaican-blooded supporter, actress Kerry Washington sent congratulations before urging followers to vote Biden-Harris 2020!
Overwhelmed by this historic moment. @KamalaHarris is the first Black woman & first Asian-American/Indian to be a VP nominee of major party. My heart is soaring for all the kids out there who see themselves in her and will dream bigger because of this. #KamalaHarrisForVP— kerry washington (@kerrywashington) August 11, 2020
Time for facts with Wayne Chen
Kamala Harris is the first Black woman on a major ticket. Her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, who died in 2009, emigrated from India in 1960, was an endocrinologist. Her father, Donald Harris, emigrated from Jamaica in 1961, and is a Stanford University Emeritus Professor of Economics. pic.twitter.com/GmQ70kBtH8— Wayne Chen (@wcchen) August 11, 2020
