Hinds says Sport Ministry must state plan for resumption of sports

People’s National Party (PNP) caretaker/candidate for Eastern Hanover and Political Support for Sport, Wavell Hinds, is urging the Ministry of Sports to indicate what protocols will be put in place to ensure the safe return of sporting activities when schools reopen in September.

Schools were shuttered on March 13 as the government took steps to limit the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) on the island.

Hinds, in a statement on Tuesday, noted that “Sports remain an integral part of Jamaica's economic activity and there should be an effort to manage its return.”

“There are some sporting competitions, which are due come September and it is important that the federations are aware under what conditions they can have competitions and in what formats,” Hinds added.

The former Jamaica and West Indies batsman said he anticipates that schoolboy football, cricket, netball, basketball, and track and field among sporting events that will resume in September.

“We hope there is a plan in place,” Hinds remarked while urging the ministry to establish a taskforce and develop a plan for the phased re-opening of the industry.

“We are suggesting this takes place within the next 21 days so governing bodies will have time to make the required adjustments,” the Opposition spokesman stated.

He said the Opposition stands ready to be part of the dialog and the decision-making process.
