Charity organisation, the Friends of the National Chest Hospital, handed over several pieces of medical equipment and other items to staff of the St Andrew-based health facility last week.

Volunteers of the organisation, Donna Bunting, Winsome Heslop and Cynthia Barrett, presented the equipment, including two rolling and one desk blood pressure machines and three nebulisers, to the medical facility.

Personalised masks were also presented to the staff of the hospital.

Staff members, Sister Feron Hamilton and Nurses Dian Murray and Oslaydi Castaneda collected the items on behalf of the hospital which is the only one of its kind in the Caribbean, specialising in the treatment of all types of chest illnesses, including emphysema, asthma, tuberculosis and heart ailments.

The Friends of National Chest Hospital is a small group of volunteers who have worked alongside the hospital to assist in the promotion of the welfare and comfort of the patients and staff for over 40 years.

Of note, the original body of the volunteer group was formed in 1978.

Through fundraising events and donations, the volunteer group has been able to provide several critical medical equipment/items to the hospital throughout the years.

Among the equipment and items that have been presented by the group over time have been a standby generator, solar water heaters, heart monitors, ECG machine, nebulisers, water dispensers and physiotherapy equipment.

The current presentation of medical equipment, along with masks for the staff, is another indication of the charitable work that is being done by the group without much fanfare, but with love and compassion.
