Extortionists squeeze downtown Kingston vendors amid COVID-19

Criminals have reportedly stepped up their extortion racket against vendors across the Corporate Area, particularly in the downtown Kingston market district.

Loop News understands that extortionists are demanding more funds than they would normally ask from merchants, to mitigate against the dent in their illegal schemes due to the COVID-19 shutdown of commercial activities.

Reports from individuals who ply their trade in the downtown Kingston market district are that criminals are now seeking as much as $1,000 daily from each vendor.

It is believed that violent attacks on two vendors in separate incidents over recent weeks are linked to their refusal to comply with the demands of the hoodlums.

In the latest incident on Monday, a vendor was shot and injured close to the market district in downtown Kingston.
