Ackee Tree Foundation presents 32 Porus students with scholarships

The Ackee Tree Foundation of Porus, Manchester on Saturday presented 32 school children with scholarships valued at $1.4 million.

Most of the students who will benefit are those who have just passed the Primary Exit Programme (PEP) Examinations and are graduating into high school. Other beneficiaries are already in high school and have had their scholarships renewed.

Four of the beneficiaries are in infant school.

Chair of the Ackee Tree Group Scholarship and Awards Committee, Marcia Burrell-Osbourne told Loop News that the criteria for receiving educational assistance include academic achievement and economic challenges.

“Beneficiaries must display academic achievement, face economic hardship and display the values of the Ackee Tree Group such as discipline, a deep commitment to helping others, confidence and self-belief,” Burrell-Osbourne said.

The Ackee Tree Group is made up of prominent citizens, businessmen, returning residents and others with roots in the central Jamaican town of Porus.

This is the second year the scholarships have been awarded by the foundation.
