Prime Minister Andrew Holness has indicated that the Zones of Special Operations (ZOSO) in Mount Salem in St James and Denham Town in West Kingston are to be extended by an additional 60 days each.
In seeking the approval of the parliament for the extension, the Prime Minister noted that the 60-day period for both zones will expire this month – on December 29th in the case of Mount Salem and on December 15 for Denham Town.
This will be the second 60-day extension for Mount Salem which was declared the first ZOSO in September.
Both communities were selected as ZOSOs because of what the security forces deemed to be wanton criminal activity.
There is also a social component to the ZOSO that focuses on community development. Prime Minister Holness said this phase, which he told the House of Representatives on Tuesday was the most difficult, will now be rolled out in Mount Salem.
