Reigning world champion Tajay Gayle of Jamaica finished third in the men's long jump at the 10th edition of the Galà dei Castelli in Bellinzona, Switzerland, a World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze meeting, on Tuesday.
Gayle’s best jump bore 7.99m in what was his first competition outside of Jamaica as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
Gayle stunned the world on September 28, 2019 to win the gold medal in the men's long jump at the IAAF World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar.
Many in Doha anticipated the coronation of rising long jump star Juan Miguel Echevarria. However, it was instead Gayle who beat him to the punch courtesy of a stunning Jamaican record of 8.69m – the longest wind-legal leap in the world for 10 years.
Finland’s Kristian Pulli took an upset win in Switzerland with 8.08m ahead of 2017 world bronze medallist Rushval Samaai (8.04m).
