Windies Women edged by New Zealand in thriller
West Indies Women suffered a one run defeat against New Zealand Women in the third match of their five-match T20 International series at Pukekura Park in New Plymouth on Tuesday.
Chasing 135, West Indies needed five to win from the last over with six wickets in hand but failed to achieve what appears to be an easy task.
Anna Peterson was the hero for New Zealand as she only conceded three runs and took two wickets and a run-out in the final over to give the White Ferns an unassailable three-nil series lead.
West Indies needed three off the last ball, but Merissa Aguilleira failed to connect to a flat delivery and only managed a leg bye.
The Windies Women suffered an early setback in the run-chase by losing captain Stafanie Taylor for 14 in the third over with 25 runs on the board
They then slipped to 43 for three in seven overs with Chedean Nation (eight) and Hayley Matthews (14) also back in the pavillion.
Deandra Dottin (24), Merissa Aguilleira (38 not out) and Kycia Knight (26) put the Windies back on track and they really should have closed out the game but for Peterson’s heroics at the death.
Peterson finished with figures of two for 25 in her four overs while Leigh Kasperek took three for 31 for the hosts as they restricted West Indies to 133 for seven.
Earlier, New Zealand Women were restricted to 134 for seven with openers Sophie Devine (41) and Susie Bates (52) scoring the bulk of the runs.
There was no other major contributors down the order as Mathews took three 24 for the Windies.
New Zealand, who made a clean sweep in the three-match ODI series, will look to keep up their winning momentum in the fourth T20I to be played on Thursday.
