RUN THATCHER RUN, champion trainer Wayne DaCosta’s champion two-year-old from last season, makes his seasonal debut as a three-year-old in Saturday’s third race at Caymanas Park, facing nine rivals at six furlongs, including speedsters such as CRUCIAL APPEAL and his own stablemate, United States-bred AMERICAN INVADER.

Rushed into training two weeks ago, getting four gallops in 11 days after being pin-fired for bucked shins, RUN THATCHER RUN has not raced since landing the Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes on Boxing Day but has looked well enough at exercise to beat a bunch of horses thrown together in an optional $1m claiming event.

DaCosta’s perennial rival in the trainers’ championship and current leader, Anthony Nunes, has his Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes runner-up, SUPREME SOUL, fit and awaiting the 2000 Guineas, set for April 13, after a big seven-furlong victory on January 12.

SUPREME SOUL’s stablemate, TOONA CILIATA, outbattled speedy FATHER PATRICK in the Prince Consort Stakes at seven furlongs last Saturday, setting the stage for another DaCosta-Nunes showdown.

However, DaCosta won round one of the battle, which handed him a 13th straight trainers’ title last year when he lifted RUN THATCHER RUN from virtual obscurity of winning a maiden race on December 1 to upstaging Nunes’ entire two-year-old cohort, three-and-a-half weeks later in the Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes.

DaCosta again proved his mastery with LADY BLUE in last week’s Thornbird Stakes, after her being repeatedly beaten by Nunes’ CORAZON as a two-year-old.

Omar Walker is back aboard unbeaten RUN THATCHER RUN, hunting a hat-trick of wins with the chestnut colt. Walker is also astride RUN THATCHER RUN’s half-sister, super SHE’S A MANEATER, facing CHACE THE GREAT in the seven-and-a-half furlong Chairman’s Trophy, which should be a matter of how far she wins, considering her rival is at his best going six furlongs.

First post for the 11-race card is 11:50 a.m.
