Wayne DaCosta holds keys to Governor General’s Stakes

Champion trainer Wayne DaCosta has a strong hand in Saturday’s 10-furlong Governor General’s Stakes at Caymanas Park, fielding three runners in the five-horse line-up, HOVER CRAFT, PERFECT NEIGHBOUR and last week’s winner, DYSFUNCTIONAL.

The field is completed by Anthony Nunes’ HOUDINI’S MAGIC, who faces a steep task at the distance with topweight 126lb, and Ian Parsard’s SUPERLUMINAL, who returned to form with a strong overnight allowance victory over useful DONTAE at 10 furlongs on August 6.

SUPERLUMINAL sits level at 119lb with PERFECT NEIGHBOUR who he had beaten by three-quarter length for second behind WILL IN CHARGE in the Prime Minister’s Stakes a month ago.

Meanwhile, HOVER CRAFT has the handicaps in his favour at 110lb, getting at least 14lb from HOUDINI’S MAGIC and seven each from PERFECT NEIGHBOUR and SUPERLUMINAL, giving him a grand chance to upstage rivals with Gary Richards aboard.

PERFECT NEIGHBOUR and SUPERLUMINAL are 10-furlong specialists with contrasting running styles. SUPERLUMINAL will try controlling the pace with non-claiming apprentice Javaniel Patterson astride but has HOUDINI’S MAGIC and DYSFUNCTIONAL to contend with, leaving him open to DaCosta’s two closers – PERFECT NEIGHBOUR and HOVER CRAFT.

Omar Walker has opted to partner PERFECT NEIGHBOUR even though he was aboard HOVER CRAFT two weeks ago when the eight-year-old gelding flew home at odds of 15-1 to beat sprinters at five furlongs straight, returning off a near four-month lay-up.

Getting seven pounds from SUPERLUMINAL and PERFECT NEIGHBOUR, HOVER CRAFT could get first run on the leaders in the stretch run. He has run well against both going a distance of ground in the past and could use handicaps to turn the tables this time around.

The Governor General’s Stakes is set to run off as the eighth of 11 races at 3:50 p.m.
