Waterhouse, Mount Pleasant set to lock horns in RSPL

Waterhouse are to battle Mount Pleasant Football Academy in the top match of round 23 of the Red Stripe Premier League on Sunday at Drewsland in St Andrew, starting at 7:00 p.m.

Waterhouse are second in the league on 41 points, two behind defending champions and leaders, Portmore United, with Mount Pleasant precariously placed at fifth on 34 and surrounded by four other teams that are in positions that they can push newcomers Mount Pleasant from the four-team playoffs to come.

Also on 34 points are Arnett Gardens, but with a goal difference of seven to Mount Pleasant’s four, while UWI, Tivoli Gardens and Humble Lion are on 33, 31 and 30 points respectively.

With 10 more round of matches to go before the start of the knockout phase, Waterhouse likewise will be looking to protect their status, as they only lead Cavalier on goal difference. Waterhouse’s goal difference is 16, to Cavalier’s 11.

Waterhouse and Portmore now occupy the two spots from which the ultimate claimants will automatically qualify for the semi-finals, and not have to go through the playoffs.

Despite Waterhouse being ahead in the standings, Mount Pleasant hold bragging rights in clashes between the two so far this season, having won 1-0 on September 23, the same margin they inflicted on January 9. Both matches were played at Drax Hall, Mount Pleasant’s home field.

The battle pits the league’s joint best in attack, Waterhouse, against the best in defence, in Mount Pleasant. Waterhouse and Portmore are tied on 33 goals scored, with Mount Pleasant conceding only 14 times, the least in the league.

As Waterhouse look to overcome Mount Pleasant for the first time this season, they will love the contest on their turf at Drewsland, where they have garnered 20 points, the second most by home teams, with Arnett Gardens’ 24 being the best. This is while Mount Pleasant’s travelling record has not been flattering.

Waterhouse drew 0-0 with Dunbeholden, while Mount Pleasant played to a 1-1 stalemate with Portmore in their last matches, while in the previous round, Mount Pleasant defeated Dunbeholden 2-0 and Waterhouse stopped Humble Lion 1-0.
