Waterhouse hoping to get into Concacaf Champions League

For Waterhouse midfielder Stephen Williams and his teammates, qualifying for Concacaf competition would be a significant accomplishment for the club.

Just once has the Jamaican side reached a Concacaf club tournament, qualifying for the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League (SCCL) in 2014-15.

Now five years later, Waterhouse can make a return to the SCCL with a win on Thursday against fellow Jamaican side Portmore United in the final match of the 2019 Flow Concacaf Caribbean Club Championship.

Even with a draw or defeat, Waterhouse would be in a position to claim a spot in the 2019 Scotiabank Concacaf League.

Whether it’s the SCCL or SCL, Waterhouse would embrace playing in a regional competition.

“It would mean a lot to the club to get into the Champions League or the Concacaf League,” said Williams to Concacaf.com following Waterhouse’s 2-0 win over Real Hope of Haiti on Tuesday.

“This is a great opportunity for our players and for club football in Jamaica to play in this competition and now have that chance to go on to play in a bigger league,” added Williams.

Williams was one of the goal-scorers for Waterhouse in the win over the Haitians and there is no doubt that the club is feeling confident ahead of Thursday’s Portmore United showdown.

“We had to put in a good shift and ensure that we could end up with the three points. This result keeps us in the running to finish on top of the group. We have to come out ready for the last game and try to get another victory,” concluded Williams.

The winner of the 2019 Flow Concacaf Caribbean Club Championship will qualify directly to the 2020 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League, while the runner-up and third place finishers will qualify for the 2019 Scotiabank Concacaf League.

The fourth-place finisher will face S.V. Robinhood (SUR), winner of the 2019 Caribbean Club Shield, in a playoff match to determine the third club that will represent the Caribbean in the 2019 Scotiabank Concacaf League.
