A route taxi driver and his passenger were seriously injured in a traffic accident along Shortwood Road in St Andrew on Tuesday night.

The incident happened in the vicinity of the Stella Maris Church.

Reports are that, about 9pm, the route taxi driver was ferrying a passenger along Shortwood in the direction of Manor Park when the Toyota Probox he was driving was rammed by a Honda CRV.

Persons who claimed to be eyewitnesses said the driver of the Honda CRV was travelling in the opposite direction and had overtaken a line of traffic.

The taxi driver reportedly broke his right leg and left arm, while his passenger was hit unconscious. Both had to be cut from the vehicle by firefighters who arrived on the scene with their jaws of life.

The condition of the driver of the Honda CRV was not ascertained.
