JLP caretaker for East Portland, Ann-Marie Vaz addresses Labourites on Sunday in Manchioneal.

Declaring that she was a "proud country girl", Jamaica Labour Party standard bearer in East Portland, on Sunday painted herself as the candidate more in tune with the ideals of constituents ahead of the April 4 by-election in the constituency.

Speaking at a party meeting in Manchioneal, Vaz said: "When I stand here in Manchioneal or Fairy Hill, or Prospect, or Port Antonio and Fellowship... I feel right at home, because I am a proud country girl, I am proud of my roots."

Her comments came a week after the People's National Party's prospective candidate, Damion Crawford described his political battle against Vaz as a fight against classism

Vaz and Crawford are seeking to fill the vacancy created by last month's murder of sitting Member of Parliament for the constituency, Dr Lynvale Bloomfield.

In making her case for the vote, Vaz on Sunday received help from a number of JLP bigwigs including Audley Shaw, Dr Nigel Clarke, Robert Montague and James Robertson. Watch the video below.
