Ann-Marie Vaz is promising a "new day" for residents of East Portland after being elected Member of Parliament for the constituency in Thursday's by-election.

Vaz, who represents the ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), is assuring stronger representation for constituents towards making their lives better.

Speaking Thursday evening at the victory celebrations in the Port Antonio square, Vaz said, "I answered the call and today marks a new day for East Portland as I stand here representing every little girl across this constituency, who have big dreams and I want every little girl, every woman, every man, every boy, to understand that when you have dreams and you believe in that dream and take the steps, your dream will come true.

"I stand here to facilitate every single one of your dreams, as I am going to be with you, walk with you as we are going to travel the road to prosperity. Hopelessness and despair ends tonight as we are going to hold hands and heart to move this constituency from poverty to prosperity," Vaz said.

Vaz defeated the People's National Party's Damion Crawford by over 300 votes in Thursday's ballot.

"I will never let you down as I am going to stand in parliament and lobby every minister so that we can close the gap on 30 years of destruction in eastern Portland," Vaz told constituents.
