VOX POP: Mixed feelings about minimum wage

Government has increased the minimum wage by 13 per cent, from $6,200 to $7,000 per week, effective Emancipation Day, August 1.

The increase was announced by Minister of Labour and Social Security, Shahine Robinson, during her presentation to the House of Parliament in the 2018/2019 Sectorial Debate on Tuesday.

At the same time, the minimum wage for industrial security guards has been increased by 9.6 per cent, also effective August 1, moving from $8,854 per week to $9,700 per week. This works out at $242.50 per hour.

The ruling Jamaica Labour Party, in the lead up to the 2016 General Election, had promised to increase the minimum wage as, arguing that $6,200 was insufficient.
