VIDEO: Steve Smith breaks down during apology for cheating scandal

Disgraced Australian cricket captain Steve Smith choked on his words on Thursday as he admitted full responsibility for a ball-tampering plot during the third test against South Africa last weekend.

"I want to make clear that as captain of the Australian cricket team I take full responsibility," he told journalists in Sydney.

"I made a serious error of judgement and I now understand the consequences. It was a failure of leadership, of my leadership," he added.

Smith has been banned by Cricket Australia for 12 months following the scandal.

His team mate Cameron Bancroft has been banned for nine months

Opening batsman David Warner, who was also banned for 12 months, is expected to arrive in Australia later.

Smith said that the incident was the first time he had been aware of ball-tampering activities on the part of the Australian cricket team and that "it will never be happening again."
