Video: St Thomas by-election announcement from Desmond McKenzie

Last week, Chief Justice Bryan Sykes ruled that Dean Jones, who was declared the victorious Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) candidate for the Yallahs Division in St Thomas in the November 2016 Local Government Elections, was not eligible to sit in the position on the St Thomas Municipal Corporation.

This has left the Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) with a five-four seat majority on the corporation, with implications for the chairmanship of the body where the JLP held sway after the tied seat count at the polls because of having secured the most votes overall in the parish.

In response, Local Government Minister, Desmond McKenzie, held a press conference in Kingston later in the week, where a date and the timing for a by-election to fill the seat that has been left vacant by the ousting of Jones on the grounds that he was employed to the public service at the time he contested the elections, in contravention of the laws governing such polls, were announced.

Below, Loop News carries a highlight of McKenzie’s address at the press conference, and the announcement of the dates for nomination day and the holding of the by-election.
