Rachael McDonald has been in the classroom for decades, having started teaching kids at summer school as a teenager.

For a short time she even studied pre-medicine, a profession she figured would help her improve the lives of youngsters.

For her, working with children is all she has wanted to do.

Her work experience started at Hillel Academy, where she taught while pursuing a Master of Science Degree in Education. During that time, she continued to support several students through extra lessons after regular school hours.

Today, McDonald serves as the director for Fundaciones, a private institution, she opened in 2008, catering to children ranging from toddlers to teens.

Since first launching in Kingston, she has set up a location in Montego Bay.

McDonald, through Fundaciones, also provides learning tools to students in the wider Caribbean region.

She says the school has lived up to its name of laying a foundation for students, with ‘Foundations’ being the Spanish to English translation for ‘Fundaciones’.  Of course, the school places emphasis on Spanish education.

McDonald believes that language is the easiest way to learn and teach people to be sensitive and accepting of others.

Check her out in this week’s Young People in Business video feature, which is edited by Richard Baker.
