VIDEO: Probe allocation of funds to public bodies, Munroe tells media
Executive Director of the National Integrity Action, Professor Trevor Munroe has urged journalists to investigate existing allocation of funds to public bodies and how efficiently the sums are being used.
He made the remarks during an investigative journalism training workshop at CARIMAC on Saturday.
Munroe indicated that his suggestion was prompted by Prime Minister Andrew Holness reportedly calling for budget re-allocation to strengthen the anti-gang investigative and intelligence component of the country's national security system.
"But journalists, before reallocation, isn't it not important to probe existing allocations to public bodies? How transparent, how accountable and how efficient are these bodies in using huge sums of public funds already allocated?" Munroe said.
He noted that a review of 163 public bodies showed that only 37 or less than a fourth were as of March 2016 in compliance with the Public Bodies Management and Accountability Act.
