Firefighters are battling a massive blaze at cardboard box maker Jamaica Packaging Industries along Marcus Garvey Drive in Kingston.

The circumstances that led to the fire are still unclear. Several units from the Jamaica Fire Brigade are at the scene attempting to bring the blaze under control.

The fire has caused a massive buildup of traffic along Marcus Garvey Drive and sections of downtown Kingston.

Police are advising motorists travelling along Marcus Garvey Drive to use alternative routes where possible as visibility is being impacted as a result of the blaze, leading to a traffic gridlock.

According to its website, Jamaica Packaging Industries is a family-owned paper based packaging company established in Jamaica in October 1953. It acquired cardboard box maker Corrpak Jamaica in October 2016.
