The Reggae Marathon in Negril, Jamaica has been touted as being among the best marathons in the world.

"We have seen the growth of Reggae Marathon over the years... it has broken all barriers (and) it is one of, if not the top marathon in the world... in terms of the variety of the events," said Ali McNab, special advisor to the Minister of Sport.

He made the remarks Wednesday during an interview with Loop News at the launch of the 2018 staging of the Reggae Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K.

From the pasta party before the Reggae Marathon to the after party at the finish line, McNab believes that the event has all the elements to be "here to stay".

At the launch, held at the Digicel headquarters, Reggae Marathon race director Alfred 'Franno' Francis said up to 3,000 competitors from more than 25 countries are expected to participate at the 2018 staging of the event, which will be held on Sunday, December 2.

Francis also attributed the success of the Reggae Marathon to the variety of elements that make the event unique including the music, parties, massages and even the coconuts that are served after the race.

"It's the full works," Francis said.

Reggae Marathon has been endorsed by the Ministry of Tourism as a key event on its calendar.

"It not just works for the health of it, but also for the economics of it in terms of driving the tourism product and ensuring that we continue to put the best part of Jamaica in front of the public," Donovan White, director of tourism at the Jamaica Tourist Board, told Loop News.

The races will begin and end at Long Bay Beach Park in the resort town. Start time is 5:15 am.
