Almost 900 persons have sought refuge in shelters as Hurricane Maria passes over the chain of islands in the Turks and Caicos islands on Friday.
The majority of persons are being housed at churches and community centres across the country as islanders take no chances with the storm, which is now a Category 3 hurricane.
The Department for Disaster Management and Emergences (DDME) issued a warning via SMS and social media a short while ago telling everyone to remain indoors. This after a few persons were seen venturing along roadways. The DDME also warned businesses to refrain from opening today and not put their employees’ lives at risk. The disaster management agency says it has not issued an “all-clear”.
In the meantime, large swells up to 6 feet are now battering the northern and eastern parts of the group of islands.
