Video: Dexter Mears defies notion of venturing too early into business

Though officially starting the business in 2015, Dexter Mears wanted to become a businessman from his days at Kingston College.

“Never let other people’s discouragement be the reason you failed,” was the advice that fuelled Dexter Mears’ drive to start and successfully manage his marketing and advertising company, Mears Media.

Mears Media offers a number of marketing services using LED technology to broadcast media, news and information from the roof of taxis, with the drivers also serving as brand ambassadors.

Though officially starting the business in 2015, Mears wanted to become a businessman from his days at Kingston College.

In fact, he somewhat ignored his father’s wishes to “hold off on that and focus on school”, and instead opted to order equipment online to get his business going.

Still in school, but now reading for his Bachelor of Law Degree at the University of the West Indies, Mona, the 21-year-old also hopes to pursue an MBA at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

“Studying law has really helped me to understand intellectual property, doing up contracts and other things that have helped me to streamline my business,” Mears said while indicating that an MBA would give him the requisite skills to take his company even further.

Until then, the young businessman is working to introduce panoramic videos, as well as virtual reality material, among other things, to be better equipped to successfully engage companies who want to reach other segments of their respective potential markets.
