UWI FC look to solidify top six spot in RSPL on Sunday

Portmore United lead the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) by five points going into Match Day 29 on Sunday, March 3, 2019.

Portmore United lead the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) by five points going into Match Day 29 on Sunday, March 3, 2019.

With virtually no margin of error in their bid for a top six spot in the 2018-2019 Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL), the University of the West Indies (UWI) FC will be hunting precious points on Match Day 29 on Sunday.

UWI FC will host leaders and defending champions Portmore United at Mona Bowl in a very tough match and with only five matches remaining in the preliminary round they can't afford to lose.

At the end of the preliminary round,  the top two teams on points will advance straight to the semi-finals; while third to sixth place will enter into a playoff for the other two semi-final spots.

UWI  FC are currently fifth in the standing on 42 points, one more than Arnett Gardens, which occupy the sixth and final playoff spot. However, with 15 points still up for grab, seventh-place Tivoli Gardens (35 points and eighth-place Humble Lion (31 points) can both get into the top six and as a result UWI FC and Arnett Gardens cannot afford to slip.

Portmore United (56 points) will enter the match against UWI FC with a five-point lead and the only team to have secured a spot in the top six. But with the top team at the end of the preliminary round walking away with a million dollar, the incentive should inspire Portmore United to continue playing at their best.

The two met twice this season, with the first ending in a 1-1 draw in October and UWI winning the second 2-1 in January.

An interesting game looms between the two teams based on the statistics. Portmore United have garnered 31 of their 56 points on the road, while UWI have earned 20 of their 42 points at home.

Things are also interesting at the foot of the standing, as any of the bottom six still face the possibility of relegation with Montego Bay United and Reno presently in the drop zone.
