Police fear an escalation of a longstanding feud between rival gangs in Mountain View, St Andrew following the killing of a man in the Goodridge Lane area of the community on Thursday night.

The circumstances surrounding the killing of the man - said to be a popular higgler - are still unclear, but sources from the area told Loop News that the incident was the result of a conflict between men from Jacques Road and Goodridge Lane.

The conflict is believed to be in relation to missing materials from construction sites in the community.

"Men from both communities have been working on two construction sites where some apartments are being built," a police insider told Loop News.

According to the source, accusations were made about material from the sites going missing and the police had intervened in the dispute - meeting with men from both communities - after being informed about the situation.

The police insider said the missing material was found and it was thought that the development would put an end to the dispute. Apparently, this was not the case and residents are now on edge over the possibility of more bloodshed in the area.

"Retaliation may be brutal enuh, you know how dem ting yah can guh," a resident said.

Amid heavy gunfire in the community on Friday morning, police warned members of the public to avoid the area. The law enforcement officials have also sought to assure residents and other members of the public that the situation was being brought under control.

"Since the attack, members of the island security forces have increased their numbers in the area and have managed to bring calm to the area," a senior officer told Loop News.
