A woman who was caught on tape slapping a teenage girl in Trelawny has been charged with assault occasioning bodily harm, the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) announced.

The woman, identified as 53-year-old Chinese national Yuemei Pan, was arrested and charged on Thursday, December 7, 2017, the same day as the incident, the JCF said on Friday afternoon.

However, the JCF said that no evidence was offered against the woman when the matter was brought before the Trelawny Parish Court on Wednesday, January 9.

A video of the incident, which took place inside a grocery store on Main Street in Clark's Town, was shared online on Friday morning and drew widespread condemnation from Jamaicans on social media.

In the 30-second video, Pan is seen holding the child while accusing the girl of stealing from her. At one point the shop owner slaps the child in the face and hurls an expletive at the girl who was dressed in her school uniform.

The JCF said a report of the incident made to the Police on the same day, and Pan was arrested and charged.
