University hospital hit hard by shortage of nurses

The cancellations are due to a shortage of critical care and theatre nurses at the facility, James Moss-Solomon, the chairman of the hospital, said during a Lion’s Club luncheon Wednesday afternoon.

However, Moss Solomon said plans are in place to rectify the situation.

The plans, he disclosed, include bringing in nurses from Cuba and India.

Moss-Solomon said that a number of nurses from Cuba will arrive in the island by the middle of February.

He said that some 50 nurses will be recruited form India.

Moss-Solomon said that the shortage has been brought on by the fact that specialist nurses are leaving the island and that not enough are being trained.
