U17 Reggae Boyz lose again at Concacaf Championship
Jamaica lost their second straight game at the 2019 Concacaf Under-17 Championship at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida on Friday, going down 3-2 against Trinidad and Tobago.
Trinidad and Tobago overcame an early Jamaica goal to pull off the victory and remained unbeaten in Group E.
Cristojaye Daley had Jamaica up 1-0 in the 17th minute, but the Soca Warriors responded with three unanswered goals with a pair from Jaiye Sheppard (34th and 60th) sandwiching a Justin Araujo-Wilson (44th minute) goal.
Jamaica did not throw in the towel though and made it a one-goal affair when Isaac Scott scored in the third minute of second-half stoppage time, but the Trinidad and Tobago defense would hang on to secure the three points.
It was the second straight victory for Trinidad and Tobago, which had beaten Bermuda 3-1 on the opening day of the championship on Wednesday. Jamaica had lost 1-0 against Mexico in their first match, also on Wednesday.
In the other Group E match, a balanced effort saw Mexico power past Bermuda 5-0 to claim their second win
Efrain Alvarez (10th minute and Luis Martinez Armas (16th minute) gave El Tricolor a comfortable lead at halftime, before Santiago Munoz (56th minute), Israel Luna (82nd minute) and Kevin Mariscal (87th minute) added another trio of goals to cap the decisive win.
Over in Group G, Honduras picked up their first victory with a solid 3-0 victory over Guyana. Jeffry Miranda got the Catrachos going with a goal in the 14th minute, but it was a three-minute span in the second half that sealed things for Honduras.
In the 64th minute, Miguel Carrasco doubled the lead and then minutes later in the 67th minute Miranda found the back of the net a second time to polish off the Golden Jaguars.
And Haiti continued their impressive championship with a commanding 4-1 win over El Salvador to remain the lone unbeaten team in Group G.
Fredler Christophe had Haiti up at the break thanks to his goal in the 39th minute. Haiti were keen for more and added another two goals in the 70th minute and 72nd minute through Dany Jean and Maudwindo Germain, respectively.
Yet, there was no quit from the Cuscatlecos, and thoughts of a comeback were stirred when Saul Emerson pulled one back in the 78th minute to make it 3-1, only for Haiti’s Michel Pierre to settle matters with a game’s final goal in the 87th minute.
The 2019 Concacaf Under-17 Championship comprises four groups. The top three teams from each group qualify to the Round of 16 on May 8 and 9. Four teams -- Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe, Nicaragua, and Puerto Rico -- advanced directly to the Round of 16 from a pre-tournament qualifying phase.
The quarterfinals will take place May 12, followed by the semifinals on May 14 and the final on May 16.
The four tournament semifinalists earn berths to the U-17 World Cup in Brazil as representatives of Concacaf.
