U17 Reggae Boyz drop out of contention for World Cup spot

Jamaica's young Reggae Boyz have dropped out of contention for a spot at the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Brazil.

The Reggae Boyz crashed out on Wednesday following a 2-1 defeat against El Salvador in the opening Round of 16 fixture at the 2019 Concacaf Under-17 Championship at the IMG Academy in  Bradenton, Florida.

Styven Vasquez (45th minute) and Jorge Flores (70th minute) scored for El Salvador, while Rajay Wright pulled back a goal for Jamaica in the 82nd minute.

The victory pushed El Salvador into the quarter-finals, which will be played on May 12.

Trinidad and Tobago vs. Honduras

A sensational performance from Jeffry Miranda powered Honduras to a 4-1 win over Trinidad and Tobago.

The fireworks began in the second half, with Miranda scoring his first in the 46th minute. The Soca Warriors responded though and Jaiye Sheppard brought Trinidad and Tobago level in the 57th minute.

The Catrachos would strike right back four minutes later in the 61st minute with a Jose Aguilera goal, which set the table for the Miranda show. The Honduras dangerman found his second in the 76th minute and then capped his hat trick with a score in the 88th to seal Honduras’ quarterfinal spot.

Haiti vs. Dominican Republic

Haiti topped neighbours Dominican Republic 2-0 to advance to the quarterfinals.

Haiti did all their damage in the first half and broke the deadlock with an Alejandro Jimenez own goal in the 28th minute.

Haiti then capitalized on their momentum and doubled their lead in the 34th minute through Fredler Christophe. From there the Haiti defense took over and battened down the hatches to secure the clean sheet victory.

Mexico vs. Puerto Rico

Mexico overcame an early first half deficit to reach the quarterfinals with a 2-1 win over Puerto Rico.

The Boricuas certainly fancied their chances after Jose Luis Lopez struck in the seventh minute for a 1-0 Puerto Rico lead, but Mexico would respond and a Jesus Gomez free kick in the 42nd minute brought El Tricolor level shortly before halftime.

There were chances for both sides in the second half, but in the end, it was Mexico which were able to take advantage, as Israel Luna found the winning goal in the 68th minute to send Mexico to the final eight.

The 2019 Concacaf Under-17 Championship comprises four groups. The top three teams from each group qualify to the Round of 16 on May 8 and 9. Four teams -- Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe, Nicaragua, and Puerto Rico -- advanced directly to the Round of 16 from a pre-tournament qualifying phase.

The quarterfinals will take place May 12, followed by the semifinals on May 14 and the final on May 16.

The four tournament semifinalists earn berths to the U-17 World Cup in Brazil as representatives of Concacaf.
