Two children die in Walker's Place of Safety fire

Two female wards of the state are dead following a late night blaze at the Walker's Place of Safety at 17 Lyndhurst Crescent in Kingston.

Their names are being withheld at this time to allow authorities to contact their relatives, according to Floyd Green, State Minister in the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information.

More than 30 other children at the home escaped the fire.

Loop News understands that the fire started sometime after 11:00 Monday night at the facility.

Some five units from several Corporate Area fire stations battled the inferno. There was no immediate word on the cause of the fire or the extent of the damage.

Green tweeted that the Fire Department has already started their investigation into the cause of the fire. He said the Child Protection and Family Services Agency will also launch an investigation.

The surviving children were taken to a nearby church, but it us not yet clear where they will be housed for the long term.

Social workers from the Child Protection and Family Services Agency have reportedly been providing counselling to the traumatised children and staff, some of whom wept openly at the scene.
