Tourism Intelligence International (TII), led by Trinidad-born international tourism and technology strategist Dr. Auliana Poon, has landed the much-anticipated contract to assist the Commonwealth of Dominica in the formulation of a comprehensive sustainable policy, plan and action programme for tourism development over the next decade.
Tourism Intelligence International is working with Dominica’s Ministry of Tourism and the Discover Dominica Authority to develop the island’s National Tourism Policy and Tourism Master Plan. The plan will be used to guide the Government and tourism industry stakeholders by providing them with an actionable plan, based on a clear roadmap that will focus on a sustainable approach to tourism development that aligns with international best practices. The plan seeks to address multiple fronts including the preservation of Dominica’s environment and the optimisation of the social and economic benefits from tourism to the country.
Specialists in the tourism and leisure sector worldwide and well-experienced in national tourism master planning, TII will have a multidisciplinary team of 12 consultants with over 200 years’ combined experience working on the ground in Dominica.
Dr. Auliana Poon, Managing Director of Tourism Intelligence International, acknowledged that “this Tourism Master Plan consultancy was an extraordinarily significant project for us to win as we competed against more than 20 companies from around the world.
It will be a privilege to be working with the Dominican team as the tourism sector is the engine of growth for this country and the rich natural assets, diverse heritage, strong community spirit and thriving whale watching sector all make Dominica an extraordinary eco-tourism paradise for today’s discerning traveler”.
Dr. Poon added that “Tourism Intelligence International is really looking forward to creating brand new tourism perspectives that are anchored on the tenets of responsible tourism”.
Global climate change and its impacts, including the increasing frequency and severity of extreme weather events, pose a significant risk to the Caribbean region, especially small island nations such as Dominica, and threaten the sustainability of Caribbean tourism.
Dominica recently experienced back-to-back, double-whammy natural disasters that devastated much of the island; destroying much of the capital infrastructure, homes and hotels and rattling the hopes and dreams of many Dominicans.
In furtherance of the plan to get the economy back on track after the severe storms of 2017, the Government of Dominica is making a concerted bid to be the world’s first climate-resilient nation, incorporating resilience in everything from infrastructure to the economy to the social sectors. Moreover, recognising that tourism is a critical lever within their broader national economic development, the Dominican Government is assiduously working towards the creation of a roadmap that will help identify national priorities more effectively.
