Tower Street inmate shot dead 'while trying to escape from hospital'

An inmate of the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre was shot and killed when he tried to escape custody while on a medical visit to the National Chest Hospital in St Andrew, according to the Department of Correctional Services (DCS).

In a news release, the DCS said it received a report that the inmate, who was serving a life sentence, was being treated by a doctor who asked that the handcuffs be removed.

"Following the removal of the handcuffs, the inmate tried to escape and was shot by a correctional officer," the DCS said.

The police and the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) are investigating the matter.
