For over 20 years Dave Kelly has served the Cheesefield community in St Catherine as principal of the Time and Patience Primary School.

His hard work and commitment to the success of the school allowed him to make significant improvements over the years. However, recently he needed help bolstering his efforts to further enhance the educational experience of his staff and the students.

“So far, the work that has been done was through the school’s fundraising efforts. However, we have been in need of corporate support to make changes that have a more immediate impact on the students,” said Kelly.

Answering this call was the Desnoes and Geddes Foundation who contributed over $800,000 towards material for the construction of a permanent fence for a section of the perimeter wall.

This donation was amplified by the efforts of over 20 Desnoes and Geddes Foundation members who joined forces with teachers and parents of Time and Patience Primary School.

“The construction of this fence is important because it will also allow us to keep students in a more secure environment, keep away persons who have no business on the property and in so doing foster a learning environment free of distractions,” said Kelly.

Other improvements included the painting of bathrooms, cleaning of windows, gardening and bushing of certain sections of the property.

Red Stripe Communications and Sustainability Executive for Corporate Affairs, Tyheissa Williams noted, “We have a vested interest in the community as this is where one of our Project Grow farms is located and which employs several community members. Additionally, we were integrally involved in the upgrade of the Cheesefield Community Centre, which we adopted as a Labour Day project in 2014. The upgrade of the Time and Patience Primary School is an extension of our support for the community and delivers on our mission to impact lives and enrich communities.”

Members of the Desnoes and Geddes Foundation joined forces with the staff of Time and Patience Primary School in Cheesefield, St. Catherine along with community members for their school improvement project. Team members cleaned classroom windows, painted the bathrooms, planted flowers and broke ground for a new perimeter fence, which was the main focus of the day’s activities.

Other contributions included in the Foundation’s activity pipeline is the restoration of a well that will provide community members with convenient access to water.

Member of Parliament St. Catherine North Eastern, Leslie Campbell, also participated in the day’s activities, working alongside members of the D&G Foundation and community residents. In lauding the Foundation he noted, “I am happy to see the D&G Foundation giving back to the Cheesefield community in such an impactful way.  Many persons keep saying that the youth is the future but it is good to see that the D&G Foundation is actually investing in them through this project. They have demonstrated good corporate citizenry and I am pleased with the team spirit and camaraderie among the volunteers in today's activities.”

In reflecting on the overwhelming support Time and Patience Primary School received under his leadership, Kelly expressed feeling an enormous sense of gratitude and a new feeling of excitement to complete his school improvement plans. He noted, “My vision for this school is for it to be a beacon of hope for our students. I want it to set the standard for education within this community and be an example so that other schools can emulate. I am humbled by the support we received in today’s activities and I am truly grateful for the Desnoes and Geddes Foundation as they played a significant role in making my vision more of a reality.”
