“There will be no winners in a trade war” – Xi Jinping

Addressing trade protectionism and in particular the stance taken by American President-elect Donald Trump in seeking to protect the American economy from foreign imports, the Chinese President said:  “Pursuing protectionism is like locking oneself in a dark room. While wind and rain may be kept outside, that dark room will also block light and air. No one will emerge as a winner in a trade war.”

Globalisation has been cited as the root cause of the decimation of many western economies and Xi Jinping addressed the matter by saying: “ We should strike a balance between efficiency and equity to ensure that different countries, different in social strata and different groups of people all share in the benefits of economic globalisation. The people of all countries expect nothing less from us, and this is our unshirkable responsibility as leaders of our times. “
