Teenagers shot up in Westmoreland; one dies

The Westmoreland murder tally went over the 70 mark on Sunday afternoon with the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old male in the parish.

A 17-year-old boy was also shot and injured in the attack by a group of unidentified gunmen.

The deceased has been identified as Akeem Samuels, an unemployed young man from Riverside district, Kingsvale, Hanover.

Samuels' death pushed the Westmoreland murder tally to 71 since the start of the year, which is similar to the figure that was recorded over the corresponding period last year.

Reports are that about 3:30 p.m., Samuels and the 17-year-old boy were walking along a roadway in Grange Hill when they were pounced upon and shot up by a group of gunmen.

The police were summoned and upon their arrival, the two were found suffering from gunshot wounds. They were rushed to hospital, where Samuels was pronounced dead and his friend was treated and admitted in a serious but stable condition.

The Westmoreland police are probing the incident.

Seven persons, including a two-year-old baby, were shot and killed when gunmen went amok in separate incidents in the Grange Hill area of Westmoreland on May 1 this year.
