Teen shot dead by security forces, illegal gun reportedly seized

A teenager who was reportedly seen removing an illegal firearm from his waist was shot dead by members of the security forces in Norwood, St James on Monday.

The deceased man has been identified as 19-year-old Akeem Fray of Hugga Lane in the parish.

Police reports are that sometime after 3 pm, a patrol was being conducted in a section of Norwood, when men were seen acting in a suspicious manner.

The men were said to have fled the scene and the security forces gave chase.

One of the men, later identified as Fray, was allegedly spotted removing a firearm from his waistband.

He then reportedly pointed the gun at the security forces, who by that time had approached him.

The law enforcers were reported to have taken evasive action and shot Fray.

The illegal weapon, containing several rounds of ammunition, was allegedly retrieved from his possession.

Fray was then taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has since launched a probe into the incident.

It was the second fatal shooting by the police on Monday, as an unidentified man was shot dead during a reported confrontation with the police at Ebony Park in Clarendon.

An illegal firearm with 10 live rounds of ammunition was reportedly seized during that incident.
