Take Summer Sun in Simply Magic Cup
Champion trainer Wayne DaCosta’s SUMMER SUN, who ran his best race ever on April at nine furlongs and 25 yards, beaten a half-length by 5-1 winner, LAYU KAWEN, who he allowed nine pounds, returns at the distance in Wednesday’s Simply Magic Cup at Caymanas Park, taking on rival Anthony Nunes’ BIG BANG, who was third-past-the-post as the 1-5 favourite.
Nunes has declared his runner with a tongue tie for the rematch, surprised at BIG BANG’s dismal run following his impressive debut, clocking 1:26.3 for a near seven-length win against maidens three weeks earlier, and having galloped six furlongs in 1:14.3 alongside stablemate HOUDINI’S MAGIC at exercise.
However, United States-bred SUMMER SUN appeared to have been begging for a distance of ground, which he got after four starts at shorter trips. Racing with blinkers removed and going two turns for the first time, he raced third into the lane and went down fighting in a decent 1:58.3, finishing five and three-quarter lengths ahead of BIG BANG.
Jockey Phillip Parchment, who is aboard SUMMER SUN, has been notching winners for DaCosta and owner Carlton Watson, recently booting home PRINCESS ANNIE at odds of 9-1 in the Jamaica Oaks, followed by a two-timer last Saturday – upsetters EDDIE’S PRINCESS at 10-1 in an optional claiming and 13-1 shot, UNCLE FRANK.
The Simple Magic Cup is the third of 10 races scheduled, to run off at 1:50 p.m.
First post is 12:40 p.m.
