Take Princess Ava over Sentient in Overnight Allowance race
Trainer Anthony Nunes’ PRINCESS AVA on Sunday renews rivalry in an Overnight Allowance race at a mile with her classic peers from last season, Triple Crown-winning but off-colour stablemate, SUPREME SOUL, and Gary Subratie’s SENTIENT.
PRINCESS AVA has had the better of SENTIENT in three of four head-to-head clashes, the last being a strong run-on victory at a mile on December 14.
However, SENTIENT was afterwards fitted with a visor and romped three consecutive races, finishing third last time out behind TOONA CILIATA when going for a four-timer in the King’s Plate on March 17.
Though PRINCESS AVA is returning off a long lay-up, partially forced by the three-month COVID-19 lockdown, the filly has looked great, clocking 1:27.4 and 1:14.4 at seven and six furlongs, respectively, in back-to-back Sunday morning workouts.
Dane Nelson is back aboard PRINCESS AVA, hunting a hat-trick of wins with the filly after her convincing victory over SENTIENT, a sweeping two-and-a-half length victory timed in 1:37.3.
SENTIENT, the lone speed, will try going all the way with Christopher Mamdeen. However, Nelson has been doing a good job of rousing late-kicking PRINCESS AVA down the backstretch. A mile should be just about enough real estate for the filly to nab the colt.
The overnight allowance event is the eighth of nine races scheduled. First post is 1:00 pm.
