Sunshine Girls lose close semi-final match against England

Jamaica's Sunshine Girls suffered a one-goal defeat against England in their semi-final match of the netball competition on Saturday at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in Australia.

A second-half collapse from the Sunshine Girls led to a 66-65 defeat, relegating the Jamaicans to a battle for the bronze medal.

The Jamaicans, who had high hopes of grabbing a gold medal found a stubborn England in the way, as the first quarter ended 15-all with neither team giving anything.

In the second quarter, Jamaica looked to have gotten the separation they needed to get over the line, winning the quarter 18-12 to lead at halftime 33-27.

England, however, would not go away, and by the end of the third quarter, were trailing by just four  with the scores at 47-43.

In the final quarter, things went really awry for the Jamaicans, who scored just eight goals in the quarter, against the 13 of the England side.

Helen Housby, who played at goal shoot for the first three quarters, scored 29 from 35 attempts, but it was her movement to goal attack in the final quarter that caused all the problems.

In addition, the England team moved Natalie Haythornthwaite to wing attack in that quarter and moved Joan Harten, 16 from 18 to goal shoot.

The Jamaicans never coped with the changes.

The English team also moved Eboni Beckford-Chambers to goal defence in the last two quarters and she slowly helped them slow the scoring of the Jamaicans.

For the Jamaicans, Jhaniele Fowler-Reid was immense, scoring 47 goals from 50 attempts, while Shanice Beckford had eight from nine from goal attack.

There was no playing time for Romelda Aiken, who has not had the best time of these Commonwealth Games.

The Jamaicans will now play against New Zealand on Sunday in the bronze medal game after the silver ferns were beaten by hosts, Australia, 65-44.

Australia and England will play for the gold medal— the first time a Commonwealth Games final in the sport hasn't featured Australia against New Zealand.
