Miss St Mary Ackera Gowie, an early favourite, shook off a hostile crowd reaction to her interview question, to win the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission's Miss Jamaica Festival Queen competition at the National Arena in Kingston on Wednesday night.

Along with the crown, Gowie walked away with the top cash prize of $455,000, donated by Stewart’s Automotive Group.

Miss Hanover Shantae Grant was the first runner-up, winning $255,000 from sponsor CHASE Fund; while Miss St James Chris-Ann Douglas finished second runner-up, claiming $155,000 from Norman Manley International Airport.

Gowie, who had earlier won the Most Poised and Most Culturally Aware sectional prizes for $55,000 each, seemed to have made a critical stumble when answering the question: How would you use technology to share our culture beyond our shores?

In answering, she repeated the question without saying much and the crowd booed in disapproval throughout the extended answer.

It was in stark contrast to the loud cheers she received earlier during both the Performance and Evening Gown segments of the contest, with all 13 women, in the latter, exhibiting splendor that was appreciated by the audience.
