Sparkle Diamond to rule at Caymanas Park today
Unbeaten in his last three races, including clocking the joint-fastest five-and-a-half furlong time this season, United States-bred SPARKLE DIAMOND goes for a fourth at seven and a half furlongs in Saturday’s ninth event at Caymanas Park.
Partnered by champion jockey Anthony Thomas, SPARKLE DIAMOND faces 10 rivals in an overnight allowance event, his first step towards qualifying for November’s Diamond Mile, eligibility being earnings and victories in selected races.
Even though SPARKLE DIAMOND has already earned $1.5m this season, this year’s Diamond Mile rules do not take into account purses won in groups beneath overnight allowance. In addition, earnings at that level must be in races seven furlongs or longer.
In his last race, SPARKLE DIAMOND gave away lengths at the start in a five-furlong straight event but quickly recovered to easily win with Shane Ellis, who has been replaced by Thomas, who is able to ride at 115lb.
All eyes will be on SPARKLE DIAMOND when the three-year-old chestnut colt goes to post at 5:15 p.m. The 10-race card runs off at 12:30 p.m.
