Spanish Town man fined $10,000 for smoking in public place

A man from Spanish Town, St Catherine is reportedly the first person to be charged with the offence of smoking in a public place since the offence came on the law books almost four years ago.

Chester Brown, 29, was slapped with a $10,000 fine after pleading guilty to the offence in the St Catherine Parish Court on Friday.

The presiding Parish Judge, Merna Johnson, gave Brown the alternative of 10 days in prison.

Brown was also charged with disorderly conduct out of the same smoking incident, but the additional charge was withdrawn by the prosecution.
