Soldier shot and injured in August Town
A Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) soldier was shot and injured during a shootout with gunmen in African Gardens, August Town, St Andrew.
Reports are that at about 9:45 pm, on Thursday JDF members went to premises on Bedward Crescent where they saw a group of men acting in a suspicious manner.
The men reportedly opened fire on the soldiers and a shootout ensued. Reports are that during the exchange, the soldier was shot and injured.
Police said they are currently questioning a man from August Town community who reportedly turned up at hospital suffering from gunshot wounds.
The attack on the JDF members comes less than a month after four policemen were shot, three fatally during an operation in Horizon Park, Spanish Town, St Catherine.
Reports are that a team of officers went to the St Catherine community on June 12 and were attacked by gunmen.
Four cops were shot. A Constable Decardo Hylton and Corporal Dane Biggs died the same day. A Police Superintendent identified as Leon Clunis, who was also injured in the attack, died in hospital two weeks later.
In another incident on Wednesday, a policeman was attacked and chopped several times by a bus driver in Spanish Town, St Catherine. The driver was fatally shot during the incident.
Reports are that the driver was loading a Toyota Coaster bus illegally along Burke Road in the town when the policeman approached him and instructed that the bus should be moved to a designated area for public transportation.
Sources reported that an argument developed between the two and the uniformed policeman was attacked and chopped several times.
Police sources said one of the policeman's hands was “partially severed” from the attack.
The bus driver, 24-year-old Alex Needham, otherwise called ‘Lexi’, was shot by another policeman who saw what was happening and came to the rescue of his colleague.
