Sick crew member on cruise ship near Ocho Rios placed in isolation
A crew member on a cruise ship off the coast of Ocho Rios, St Ann, has been placed in isolation, according to the Ministry of Health.
The individual, who is of Asian descent and had travelled to that continent recently, has a high fever.
Jamaican health officials were informed of the development, and steps were subsequently taken to have that individual isolated.
Passengers on the cruise ship, which had been heading to Jamaica on Tuesday from Miami, are being quarantined.
In light of the situation, a decision has also been taken to not allow passengers to get off the ship in Ocho Rios, or any port on the island.
The measure was taken in the wake of the deadly coronavirus outbreak, which has seen over 80,000 people being infected globally, with a vast majority of the cases recorded in China.
The ship, which has over 5,000 passengers and 1,500 crew members on board, is expected to arrive in Cayman Islands on Wednesday.
The ship is currently about a mile away from the Ocho Rios port as dialogue continues between the Health Ministry and authorities on board the ship.
